what is Ibd?
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term used for two conditions that are known to cause chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract:
Crohn's disease
Causes chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.1
Ulcerative colitis
Causes chronic inflammation of the large intestine, in which the lining becomes inflamed and develops tiny open sores, or ulcers.2
What causes IBD?
No one knows the exact cause of IBD, but we do know that the immune system responds incorrectly to environmental triggers, which causes inflammation. People with family histories of IBD are more likely to develop it, but no direct genetic link has been found.
